Other than the way learning to frail completely changed my entire musical life, nothing has been more delightfully unexpected than how much picking up the ukulele has inspired me.
Several years ago, in an effort to get my girlie interested in music, I bought a $20 ukulele from a local music store. She was delighted. She learned a couple of chords. She made up songs while picking the strings. The next day it was propped up on her dresser and she didn't touch it again.
Many months of neglect lat…

My ukulele friends have been helping me bring together my Notion Tour in October and November. There are many gigs still in the air, some wafting into focus at ground level and some secured. Looks like Chicago on the 9th and 10th of October, followed by Cincinnati around Columbus Day, Cape Cod on the 17th, Boston then Nova Scotia Ukulele International Ceilidh (highly recommended!) and Baltimore Oct. 30 and 31. Other cities along the I-80 corridor are in discussion, and in the early part of Novem…

In August of 2009, my family rented a beach house for a week on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan at Sturgeon Bay. I packed my Talsma tenor ukulele and my portable Zoom H4N digital recorder.
My plan was to record solo ukulele songs using traditional 1920-1950's recording techniques. I've always admired the musicians of that era and their ability to go into the studio and play a song from start to finish flawlessly, starting over if they made a mistake. Here's what I did...
My "studio" was an…

I finally got back to work chopping out songs from the loong video of the Snake Suspenderz appearance at the 2009 National Kazoo Day celebration.
There are two new ones;
Dead Egyptian Blues and
The Lady Is A Tramp. And the final one I'm going to edit is currently boiling down on the old eMac!
As is my custom, I've posted all
the nitty gritty facts on my blog. And you can view the vids there too.
Do leave feedback!…

Occasionally at our band practices we haul out Thadd's Zoom H2 and record a tune or three, live into stereo. Thadd downloads 'em onto his Mac, sweetens them up a bit, and we release them, for free, as part of our "rehearsal tapes" series.
There's a number of them out there already... six since we added sal on tuba.
We recorded our latest one yesterday,
Tiny Bubbles.
You can read all
the gory details on my blog as well as…

Last Saturday night my band,
Snake Suspenderz released our newest (and most ambitious) project to date,
Serpentine.
There are 14 original tunes on the CD and 2 covers. Some of the original songs are written by me, some by Thaddeus Spae (trombonist in the band) and some co-written by the both of us.
This is a DIY project — yeah, we gots the indie cred! — from start to finish. We even designed and built the packaging ourselves. It's Tha…

I am.
You should be too.
Talk about it in your personal blog, on your favorite forums, to your friends in your local ukulele club and to anyone else you know that might be interested.
A ukulele social network goes so far beyond the usual forums and has so much more to offer.
Remember! The more the merrier!

I'm one of the many cases who grew up "nicknameless". No shortening of "Alan" to "Al". No cool nick such as "Flash" or "Bud". I'm also cursed with the name I go by, "Alan", not being my first name. It's actually my middle name. "Philip" is my first name and this has doomed me to a lifetime of uncertainty. Am I "Philip A. Johnson"? Or perhaps "Philip Alan Johnson"? Maybe "P. Alan Johnson" which I adopted as my legal signature.
So if I was ever going to have a nickname, I decided I'd have to do i…
