Profile Information

What are your favorite ukuleles?
I love playing my Hawaiian Ukes--a Kamaka Tenor & a Tangi Tenor--there's just nothing like the warmth of solid Koa. My "working uke" is a tenor Ohana (TK 35 G) I keep it in the high G tuning--a fine instrument and one that I play everyday serenading cancer patients and their families as a wandering minstrel and artist -in-residence at Roswell Park Cancer Hospital.
Who are your favorite ukulele players?
Too many to mention...Oh I like them all. Jake, James, Aldrene...gotta love them since they're all blowing it wide open. I bow to the masters of old, Roy Smeck, Cliff Edwards, Herb Ohta, Lyle Ritz...
Do you have a website?
Not yet for the Uke, but my gypsy Jazz band's site is: www.babikjazz.com
Do you have recordings, CDs, Books for sale? Where can we find them?
"Babik: Pronounced Bah-Beek" and our newest "American Gypsy" are available at amazon.com, CD baby.com and at i-tunes.
My Musical Biography
Stuart Fuchs is a Guitarist, Multi-Instrumentalist and Teaching Artist based in Buffalo N.Y. As a young boy he would sneak his father’s classical guitar into the forest to play along with the birds. Stuart brings this playful and free spirited approach to whatever instrument that finds its way into his hands.

Over the years Stuart has studied and performed just about every style of music that can be played on a guitar. After “cutting his teeth” in classic rock and heavy metal bands during high school and college, he turned his attention to classical and world music. While attending S.U.N.Y. Cortland, Stuart studied orchestral percussion and upright bass. He performed in pit orchestras, chamber ensembles and composed music for theater, including a live radio play adaptation of David Mamet’s “the Water Engine”.

After relocating to Buffalo, Stuart devoted himself to the art of classical guitar. Within a few months he was accepted to the University at Buffalo’s school of Music where he studied under Professor Joanne Castellani. During his time at U.B. Stuart was awarded the Gherhee Scholarship for music performance. “When compared to the technological advances in electronic music, the classical guitar is such a simple instrument. However, it continues to offer the player an entire world of tone colors and wide range of possibilities for expression.”—S.F.

While pursuing his classical guitar studies, Stuart began to study Afro-Latin percussion and soon became entranced by drumming and indigenous world music traditions. He learned to play the Australian Aboriginal Didgeridu, and the Mongolian Jawharp—both are instruments that produce a wide spectrum of harmonic overtones and have a great power to place the player and listener into a trance-like state.

In 2004, Stuart co-founded the Gypsy Jazz band “Babik” (Bah-beek) which the Buffalo News calls “One of the hottest bands in Buffalo”. Babik plays music in the style of the legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and has won “Best Jazz Band” from Artvoice magazine’s reader’s poll for three years running. In March of 2008 Babik performed at Kleinhanns Music Hall with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Visit www.babikjazz.com for more about Babik’s recordings and concerts.

Stuart is passionate advocate for free improvisation and the possibilities it offers for self-expression and personal empowerment. As a certified Music for People instructor (www.musicforpeople.org), Stuart is an active facilitator of drum circles and improvisation workshops. He has led drum circles and improvisation workshops for a wide spectrum of populations including mentally handicapped adults, and also at Yoga Retreat Centers in Buffalo, Colorado, Florida and Costa Rica. Stuart is an artist on the roster of Young Audiences of Western New York, and leads workshops and assembly programs for children of all ages.

Stuart is currently an artist in residence at Roswell Park Cancer Institute as part of the University at Buffalo’s Arts-in-Healthcare initiative. As an artist in residence, he works bedside with cancer patients, their families, and hospital staff--facilitating music and the creative arts. “Music, along with all the arts, has the power to heal and give meaning to both the joyful and the most difficult periods of our lives. There is so much that the creative process can reveal about ourselves that the spoken word cannot.”—S.F.

Stuart is proud to be an adjunct faculty at Canisius College, where he teaches guitar and the Ukulele to undergraduate students.

Old School Soprano Uke in da' House!

My Bandmate's wife has lent me a soprano...a really old one that was in her folk's basement for years!

I've always been a fan of the tenor uke and have been blessed to have a few very fine ones come into my life (My Kamaka & Tangi). this one is such the "old school uke" and I love it! It has a bowed back and the old fashioned tuning pegs. It has a really classic tone and it's size and wieght makes it really easy to do some Roy Smeck-type antics on it!

Inside the soundhole it says "Barth-Fe… Continue
