After 40 years playing acoustic guitar, I was inspired to take up the ukulele in March '06 and I just love it. I play mostly vintage music from the 20s-50s.
My whole lifestyle is built around "old Florida" design, which lends itself very well to vintage ukuleles and music—it's very similar to old Hawaii in that way. I've adopted the stage name Nina Coquina—Nina is a nickname my late mother always called me, and coquina is a type of shell you'll find on some of the beautiful beaches here.
I've had the great pleasure of getting together to play ukulele with some terrific local people like John King, Bob Gross, Papaya Boy and John Deck. Plus I've had a number of ukulele-playing visitors come by while on vacation. 2008 highlights included a visit from Craig Robertson and Bosko & Honey. In July I attended the Augusta Heritage Swing Week in West Virginia, and met and jammed with Gerald Ross and watched him take the stage with the great Johnny Gimble.
I'm in the process of putting together a mini-uke festival on April 8 through 11, 2009 here in SW Florida, hosting Joel Eckhaus and Ralph Shaw. I hope you will consider coming down for a week or long weekend at one of the loveliest times of the year and play uke with us on the beach.

Hey Nancy-
Thanks for the note! I do hang on the Martin forum.
It's great running into you here. I've always enjoyed your spunk and fantastic music posts.
Cheers,
Gretchen
It's 1AM in Annapolis MD; I have really enjoyed reading your very sweet comments. I wasn't aware that any of my songs were up. I am wondering which ones you heard. I was happy to learn that you sang along with harmony. That's what I love to do as well. I imagine that you heard some produced in a real studio.
I live in the South of France in the Gulf of St Tropez. The town looks like a Hollywood movie set.
I love , Love your wonder picture. It is the most vivacious and happy of them all. I am sure you are adored by many.
Love, annie

Yay! Nina is here!
Hmmm... in rhythm and on pitch? Dang.
I took the little Flea out to busk today at Pike Place Market. A friend who works there (and just recently took up uke to augment his guitar) said he heard the little fella... and he was at least 50 yards down the arcade.
Oh! THAT Nancy! A pleasure. Nice to have a face. I met a Cosmopolite in New York after exchanging several emails and had somehow pictured a quiet young French guy ( I don't know why), and discovered he was a bouncy 60ish Dutch woman. It was a treat, after the surprise...

Hi Nancy,
I grew up iin Michigan and I live in France and in Annapolis, MD. The uke I play is the baritone for the past 62 years. I love it even more now. I can't wait to hear you play. Have you put up an mp3 of your music? I hope so.

Hi, Nancy, and thanks for the message. Yes, there seem to be quite a few uke players in these parts. I've met a few in Dallas but I'm always on the lookout for more. There are many in Fort Worth as well. And speaking of Fort Worth, I'll be over there tomorrow night (the 15th) doing three songs on the uke as part of a little musical review a friend is staging. I'm relatively new to live peformance with the uke, so it'll do me good, I'm sure. I'll let you know how it goes.

Great idea Nancy! I'll try to change the name of the Talsma fan group. If you'd like to start groups I think you can click on groups in the upper left corner of the main page. Then there should be a green plus sign that says "Add a Group". If you don't see it please let me know.

I don't know when we'll be coming back to Florida, but we will. That's all I can say really. It was the best holiday we ever had! Aaah . . . the sun.
Just seen Bob's joined up. Woohoo!
