Banjo Ukulele Gets a Grammy Nomination

Hi Ukulele Players!
We found out that our most recent Children's CD "Banjo to Beatbox" was nominated for a Grammy. Hmmmm...I wonder how many banjo ukulele players have been nominated over the years? It's possible that I'm the first. I'll check into it.
We're also on another CD "Singin' Through The Hard Times: A Tribute to Utah Phillips" that was nominated. Utah wasn't a ukulele player but he was an amazing person and writer. Check him out.

All the Best,
Marcy

Marcy, regarding the James Hill video clips, this is the first I heard of this. To answer your question, no one has talked to me about not putting up a couple of clips from his concert. I did write a note to James the weekend I got back from the concert to let him know if this was an issue, to let me know. (I did this through the contact section on his web site). I am fairly new at all this youtube stuff so don't want to cause any problems. The only purpose I had in the first place is to share this wonderful event with the Ukuleleunderground forum which I am a member. There are over 13,000 members around the world. We all often, after coming back from uke events, give a review and put up a couple of clips to share with the membership. I wrote a very positve review about Strathmore & the concerts. I would think this would be great exposure for any artist. However, because I have not yet heard back from James, I pulled them off youtube until I get an answer from him. But, to repeat, no one told me about not using these 2 clips. I hope this answers your questions. Bottom line, I love sharing the ukulele message and promoting great artist like James and wonderful events like Strathmore. That was my only intent. Thanks

Marcy,
I'd be interested in the Master Class that James Hill will be doing at Strathmore. What should I do to get on the list ? If you have any details regarding the Uke Fest there I'd like to be in the loop. Dave Means told us the MUA is dropping this years date to support this one at Strathmore so if I can help in some way I'd like to pitch in. My E Mail address is dboz553 @ yahoo . com
Thanx,
Boz

Marcy -

Your 12th street rag tutorial video gave me a great boost in learning it... thanks! I had found it on youtube, and just put it together that the woman in the video was the woman who started usc. So, I owe you a double thanks:

Huge double thanks for both the videos, and this site! Both are a huge help to us new players.

I'm in Baltimore so maybe we will cross paths sometime...

Well, I've dabbled in lutherie since high school. A few years back I made a ukulele for my wife and she likes it. We have it tuned EADG like her fiddle, so she can use to to study doublestops. (Added benefit - since I am more of a mando player than a uke player, I grab her uke when I want to realy tear things up).

Well, then I decided to build three more ukes. Of those I finished one just about a year ago. I went to a songwriter's retreat and toook my two-week-old uke along with me. One of the other folks there played my uke and fell in love with it. I had to sell it to her.

Both of these ukes are sopranos built about the size and shape of an old uke I have from my childhood - and it was very old then. I think it's from the 1920's. I was playing it tonight at the Uke Club of Santa Cruz.

I still plan to build more ukes but my instrument making got diverted later last year when I built myself a 5-string resonator mandolin. Many people exressed strong interest in it, and so I have begun jigging up to produce them in (small) quantity. I completed #2 last week and will start a batch of three this weekend, I hope.

but it does mean that uke building is on hold for a while until I get some of these built and into the hands of eager players!

Marcy-
I bought a ukelele 45 years ago, to play one "cowboy-chord" song
at a Laurel & Hardy club event; and have had it hanging on a wall as a decoration since, even while playing my 12-string guitar, upside down, in any number of "ensemble" groups, until running across your site...and now, I'm actually PLAYING my "wall decoration". Thank you.

They've been travelling through the US, Europe and Japan on a "Ukulele Safari" , and have recording with a who's who of other ukulele players.
