After years of enjoying "regular" ukuleles, I fell in love with banjo ukulele and build myself this :

I'll look for a photo. I do have one, somewhere, of my crazy friend Henry (wearing a mad anarchist outfit and sporting a freshly waxed mustache) holding the uke - the photo is from about 1975. I'd had the uke for about a year, and it already had metal strings on it, but I hadn't yet replaced the fingerboard and tuners and refinished it. I've tried nylon strings on this banjo, but it sounds just much much better the way I have it. It's more like a soprano plectrum banjo than a uke banjo. Sweet sounding and true.

Hi Topher,

I think you might be damaging your banjo-uke by stringing it with metal. Banjo-ukes are meant to have ukulele strings. Wire strings have more tension than nylon strings. Your banjo-uke sounds like a fun one to play. Will you post a picture of it?

I have an old Slingerland Maybell banjo uke which an old man in New Orleans gave me for helping him move out of his apartment into another one. I had to fix it up a lot, but it's a very lovely old banjo uke with a skin head.

I put metal strings on it and tune it to B-E-A-D
